Retiring Dentist Resources

Membership

Retired Membership is available to an active member in good standing who has been an active member and is now a retired member of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society.

Reduced Dues

To qualify for retired membership, and reduced dues, a dentist may no longer be earning an income from serving as dental school faculty, as a dental administrator or consultant, or as a practitioner of any activity which requires a license to practice dentistry or dental hygiene.

To activate Retired Membership, please complete and return the Affidavit for Retired Membership to Susan Prosperi, Membership Director, at susan@stlouisdental.org or via fax at 314-569-0448.

Volunteer Licensure

The Missouri Dental Board grants volunteer licenses to retired dentists and dental hygienists. To be eligible for a volunteer license, the practitioner is required to have been licensed for at least 10 years, with a license that has not been lapsed for the four years prior to the application and must have a license in good standing at retirement. They are also required to have met examination and other requirements. Dentists and hygienists are not required to pay any fee for volunteer licenses.

Dentists and dental hygienists with volunteer licenses must renew their volunteer licenses every two years and are required to submit evidence of current certification in basic life support and complete continuing education requirements of 40 hours every two years for dentists and 25 hours every two years for hygienists. Contact the Missouri Dental Board for details.

Practice Transitions: Selling or Closing Your Practice

Both the MDA and the ADA have many resources available to help guide you through this important transition.

The ADA Guide to Closing a Dental Practice contains useful information to help you with the many details involved in ending a practice. This resource contains information regarding informing patients and authorities of the closing of the practice; steps to dismiss the staff; disposing of dental equipment, supplies and instruments; and how to deal with patient records.
